La Palma is located in the north west of the Canary islands, one of the smaller islands, it has a sub tropical climate. The island still has the untouched look and is sometimes refered to as the beautiful island.
La Palma is still a volcanic island. Two million years ago, a giant eruption with the formation of a shield volcano some 20 km in diameter formed La Caldera de Taburiente (one of the Spanish National Parks), the main natural feature of the island. It is impressive, occupying about a quarter of the total area of La Palma, 9 km across and 2 km deep. However, the Caldera was formed not only by the original volcanic activity, but also by subsequent erosion. The result is one of the largest and most beautiful erosion craters in the world. From the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory at the summit you have a magnificent view in to the Caldera (eastern part of the island).
At the sourthern tip of La Palma near Fuencaliente (forever warm spring), are two volcanoes: San Andrés and Teneguía. The largest one is San Andrés. This almost perfectly cone-shaped volcano is completely black. You can walk around the rim of the crater. The smaller one is the Teneguía, named after a light coloured rock just to the west of it. The Teneguía volcanoe exploded in 1971 and is still hot at some places. The landscape is thrilling around here. It is said that this site is one of the closest ones you can get to an Inferno. Also the surroundings are excellent vineyards. The Teneguía wine is considered to be very good, but it varies from season to season.
