London is one of the worlds largest and important cities, and used to be the worlds largest metropolis and although it has ceded that title to the sprawling cities of the southern hemisphere, its still a huge bewildering place if its your first visit. It was founded before Roman times and has seen extensive building after the Fire of London (1666) and the Second World War (1939 to 1945). It is now a mixture of the old and new. Historic sites a thousand years old sit in a vibrant financial and cultural centre
London is in fact two cities - The City of London usually just called The City, and Westminster, which lies to its west. With a population of just under eight million, London is Europes largest city, spreading across an area of more than 620 square miles from its core on the River Thames. Ethnically its also Europes most diverse metropolis: around two hundred languages are spoken within its confines, and more than thirty percent of the population is made up of first-, second- and third-generation immigrants.
The main geographical feature of the city is the river Thames, which meanders through central London, dividing it into northern and southern halves. The central area and the most important sights, theatres and restaurants are within the Undergrounds Circle Line on the north bank of the river.
The trendy and tourist-ridden West End lies within the western portion of the loop and includes Soho, Trafalgar Square, Piccadilly Circus, Leicester Square and Regent St. The East End, so beloved of Ealing comedies, lies east of the Circle Line; it used to be the exclusive preserve of the Cockney but is now a cultural melting pot.
There are interesting inner-city suburbs in North London, including Islington and Camden Town. South London includes a mess of poor, dirty, graffiti-ridden suburbs, such as Brixton, which have vibrant subcultures of their own and are in many ways where the real vitality of London lies.
For the visitor, too, London is a thrilling place – and in the last few years, the city has been in a relatively buoyant mood. Thanks to the national lottery and the millennium-oriented funding frenzy, virtually every one of Londons world-class museums, galleries and institutions has been reinvented, from the Royal Opera House to the British Museum. In the Tate Modern and the London Eye, the city can now boast the worlds largest modern art gallery and Ferris wheel, and the first new bridge to cross the Thames for over a hundred years.
Furthermore, following sixteen years of being the only major city in the world not to have its own governing body, London finally acquired its own elected assembly in 2000, along with a mayor whos determined to try and solve one of Londons biggest problems: transport.
