Car hire in Coventry
The city of Coventry has suffered some hard times not least during World War 2 were it took a particular battering from the Luftwaffe and many of its historic buildings were destroyed and unfortunately replace far inferior architecture.
Coventry was in its prime as a industrial city in the 1970’s when it was the centre of Britain’s car and aircraft manufacturing as these industries declined so Coventry had to look at reinventing itself.
The main focal point in Coventry is the Cathedral. The cathedral stood tall over Coventry with one of the tallest spire in Britain, until on the 14 th November 1940 the cathedral was destroyed by German bombs and only the outer wall remained.
The city decided to leave the ruins to act as a reminder of what the city of Coventry suffered during the 2 nd World War and build a brand new Cathedral right next to it. St Michaels Cathedral was designed by Sir Basil Spence and built between 1952 and 1962.
With two universities in the city, there is a thriving night life and some very good restaurants, many of the city centre pubs however are aimed at the student population and are dull and lack any character.
