Birthplace of Alison Moyet Depeche Mode and the elephant man himself, John Merrick, Basildon was one of eight new towns planned for South East England in the 1940’s. In truth the town to Saxon times when it was little more than a small village near the site of Holy Cross Church and it was known as Beorhtels Hill. During its development several hundred acres were designated as green areas, which now include Gloucester Park, Northlands, Wat Tyler Country Park and Mopsies
