Car hire in Barking
Barking is a suburban town in East London, with a steep history in fishing and boat building trades although pubs and street names are the only real reminder of the trades former importance in the town. Records of salt water fishing in Barking begin in 1320 when the local authorities seized two nets. This grew and the Short Blue Fleet, Englands largest fishing fleet, was based in Barking.
With close links to London, the Barking train station was opened in 1854 and received a major modernisation in the 1960s and is perfect for a short journey to access the busy city centre and underground lines.
Barking did house Barking Abbey, a nunnery created in 666. The parish church now stands on this site where some foundations and small peices or wall remain.
